Sven Ellekaer 3-Seater Leather Sofa for Coja, 1960

An exceptionally generous three-seater sofa by Danish designer Sven Ellekaer, manufactured by Coja. The design combines the clean construction of 1960s Scandinavian furniture with a decidedly comfort-oriented, almost casual upholstery.

The sofa is in very good authentic vintage condition. The dark brown leather is soft and supple and shows age-appropriate patina and minor signs of wear. The wooden frame also presents itself well-maintained with minor traces of use. Overall, a well-preserved example with character and a very attractive combination of warm wood and dark brown leather. The soft leather shows an attractive patina developed over decades and gives the sofa exactly that authentic depth that is particularly valued in original preserved vintage leather furniture. The straps have been recently replaced.

Characteristic is the open wooden frame, which does not merely serve as a supporting structure, but determines the entire design of the sofa. The horizontal wooden rails extend around the sides and back, lending the large sofa astonishing lightness despite its dimensions. Particularly striking are the regularly arranged dark leather loops along the lower frame – a constructive detail that simultaneously becomes an essential design element.

Sven Ellekaer belonged to the generation of Danish designers who combined Scandinavian design language with an increasingly international and more homely interpretation of modernism. His seating furniture developed for Coja is particularly known for visible wooden constructions, leather upholstery, and high seating comfort. Coja, based in Culemborg, Netherlands, produced several of his designs, combining Scandinavian design with Dutch furniture production. Comparable models for Coja and Ellekaer are documented from the late 1960s.
