Ceramic Bull Sculpture by EJM, Germany, 1930

This expressive bull sculpture in German art pottery impresses with its powerful, naturalistic design and exceptionally three-dimensional execution. The massive body, lowered head, and distinctly textured mane give the animal an impressive presence. The dark glaze accentuates the lively surface texture and, in its effect, is reminiscent of patinated bronze.

The ceramic is in perfect condition. The glaze is excellently preserved, and the sculpture shows no visible damage or missing parts. Measuring 35 cm in length and 21 cm in height, it has a considerable size and a particularly decorative effect.

The base bears the impressed mark EJM in a circle, which is associated with the art pottery production of Edgar Mertens or Martens in Ilmenau. The manufactory is particularly known for its high-quality ceramic animal sculptures, whose three-dimensional modeling and dark glazes frequently resemble classic bronze sculptures.

Stylistically, the work can be attributed to early 20th-century German animal sculpture, presumably the 1920s or 1930s. Comparable animal sculptures marked with EJM are attributed, among others, to the sculptor Karl Kemedinger (1897–1964). Kemedinger was intensively involved in the depiction of animals and knew how to translate their anatomy, movement, and characteristic expressiveness into three-dimensional forms. However, a definitive attribution of the present bison to Kemedinger is not possible at this time.

Particularly appealing is the interplay between naturalistic attention to detail and monumental form language. Despite its compact dimensions, the bison conveys remarkable strength and dynamism. The dark, bronze-colored glaze enhances the sculptural character and makes the figure an expressive example of historic German art pottery.

An authentic collector's item with an original EJM mark, which impresses both as a standalone sculpture and within a collection of historic animal sculptures.
